Recently I had the good fortune of spending time on the beautiful island of Maui. Among the waterfall hikes, lazy days on the beach, and sunset views on the mountain of Haleakala, I had the opportunity to eat some great food and delicious ice cream. Below you will find pictures and descriptions of ice cream and restaurants on Maui that I would highly recommend you try if you find yourself on this gorgeous island! Enjoy!
Coconut Glen’s was my favorite ice cream stop on the island. A roadside stand found on the winding road to Hana near Nipili, here you will find some delicious ice cream made exclusively with coconut milk from fresh coconuts found on the island. If you want, you can purchase a fresh coconut and drink the coconut water right at the stand! The ice cream is served in a coconut half and is creamy yet light. My favorite flavor was the Ginger Lemongrass.
Ono Gelato Company is an ice cream shop located in several town’s across the island. We stopped at a store in the town of Pa’ia, a surfer town on the North Shore known for its waves. The importance of using local ingredients is view shared across the island, and this gelato shop is no exception. I enjoyed a scoop of lilikoi (passion fruit) ice cream, and although it was a little icey it was still delicious. My husband downed a scoop of ice cream made with chocolate and macadamia nuts.
Hula Cookies & Ice Cream is an ice cream shop the we found the last time we visited Maui, and I am happy to see that they have expanded. Fresh cookies are baked daily and the store serves ice cream made locally by Roselani. I ordered a scoop of Banana Macadamia Nut ice cream which was sandwiched between chocolate coconut cookies! Amazing!
Lappert’s Ice Cream is local ice cream company with locally sourced and named flavors (not pictured). We visited the store in Wailea, and my husband ordered a scoop of Kauai Pie (Coffee Ice Cream, Macadamia Nuts, Coconut, and Fudge) while I tried the Heavenly Hana (Chocolate ice cream, marshmallow, white chocolate covered macadamia nuts, dark chocolate almond chunks, chocolate bits & roasted almonds). Both were solid examples of well-constructed ice cream.
Kya’s Italian Ice is a small ice cream cart in the parking lot of . It was the best random food find of the trip. Although they call their product Italian ice, it really is more like sorbet, and it is made with coconut milk and other natural ingredients. I enjoyed three scoops (to which they serve everyone) of chocolate sorbet made with coconut flakes and mini chocolate chips. Mmmmm.
Here are a few of our favorite restaurants in Maui, in case you want to eat too:)
